Pleasanton, CA- Jewelry store smash-and-grab robbery shocks shoppers at Pleasanton mall.

PLEASANTON, Calif. (KGO) — Thieves smashed glass display cases and ransacked a jewelry store inside an East Bay mall Monday morning, prompting nearby workers and shoppers to run for safety. { Scott Guginsky of the Jewelers’ Security Alliance provides insight and recommendations…]

Cellphone video obtained by ABC7 Eyewitness News shows suspects using hammers to break into Zales Jewelers at Stoneridge Shopping Center in Pleasanton. The robbery happened around 11:30 a.m., according to police radio traffic.

For employees working elsewhere in the mall, the day quickly became chaotic.

“We have a restroom over there and I was hiding in that hallway,” said Tina Deng, who works at Yuyake Dandan Japanese Tapas.

Deng said she heard the theft unfolding nearby.

“They were smashing the glass,” she said. “It sounds like gunshots but not that loud.”

Deng and her coworkers were not injured, but she said everyone was shaken by the incident.

“Surprised for sure and scared for sure because I don’t know if those people have guns or what kinds of weapons,” Deng said. “I could hear them running, their footsteps too.”

Police radio descriptions indicated the suspects used hammers and pepper spray during the robbery.

Pleasanton police have not commented on the incident and have not said whether any arrests have been made.

ABC7 Eyewitness News saw two jewelry cases that appeared to have been emptied.

Scott Guginsky of the Jewelers’ Security Alliance said rising precious metal prices have made jewelry stores more attractive targets.

“The prices of precious metals are very concerning,” Guginsky said. “You know, we had gold peaking at $5,200 an ounce and I believe today it might have closed at 4,600 an ounce. So, a lot of these stores, that carry 22, 24 carat gold are being targeted, because of the value of the precious metals.”

Guginsky said new research from his organization shows thieves are changing tactics during these crimes.

“In 2024, with these types of robberies, we had three cases where they utilized mace, and we had 14 last year,” he said.

Guginsky recommended armed security as a deterrent and said law enforcement has tracked down many suspects in similar cases.

Several shoppers told ABC7 Eyewitness News they were concerned about safety and security at the mall following the robbery.

Austin, TX- WATCH: Masked thieves wielding hammers hit jewelry store in what expert calls ‘mob-style’ heist

Austin, TX– Video captured a group of alleged thieves fleeing a Texas outlet following a jewelry heist that one expert called “mob-style.” Click HERE to view video and related article provided by Fox News.

On Tuesday at around 12:47 p.m., officers responded to a report of a robbery in progress at Marc Robinson Jewelers at the Round Rock Premium Outlets, an outdoor shopping mall near Austin, police said.

Store employees told police that a group of suspects entered the jewelry store wielding hammers and began breaking glass display cases and stealing jewelry.

Employees told police that the group of thieves used pepper spray on an employee and a bystander before fleeing with a “large amount of stolen jewelry.”

Video obtained by FOX 7 captured the group fleeing the store in the aftermath of the attack.

All suspects were seen wearing masks and gloves as they fled the scene.

Police located the vehicle, a blue Hyundai Sonata, the suspects were described as fleeing in, at a nearby apartment complex.

The vehicle, police said, was stolen out of the Humble, Texas, area. The recovered vehicle was taken for processing, and the case remains active.

International Crime Free Association Executive Director Timothy Zehring told FOX 7 that this was “mob-style execution.”

“The modus operandi that the FBI and the Jewelers Security Alliance talk about, first, is the mob-style execution of these crimes. You’re generally looking at between 10 and 30 masked suspects that charge into the store, sometimes with weapons, but there are massive losses in under 60 seconds,” he said. “The price of gold has skyrocketed lately and so these crimes are very lucrative.”

Zehring said these crimes are preventable by implementing a layered security approach.

“Bollards are a great way to prevent people from smashing in. The next thing is shatter-resistant glass and film that you can put over glass even if you don’t replace the glass. Think of window tinting on your car. If they put this film on the glass, even if the glass breaks, it holds intact so they can’t get in,” Zehring said.

VIDEO: Sherman Oaks Jewelry Store Targeted in Elaborate Tunneling Burglary Attempt.

Sherman Oaks, CA – Thieves tunneled through a wall to break into Neda Jewelry in Sherman Oaks, CA, early Saturday morning, marking the latest in a string of burglaries targeting retailers in the San Fernando Valley, according to news reports.

Surveillance footage captured suspects entering a business adjacent to the Ventura Boulevard shop before tearing through a shared bathroom wall to gain entry. Once inside, the burglars crawled across the floor and smashed equipment, including credit card machines.

Despite the elaborate entry, the shop’s owner told CBS Los Angeles the thieves were unable to breach the store’s safe. The owner said he had reinforced the safe with “heavy metals” following a similar burglary attempt in 2023. While the safe held, the burglars fled with other property and caused extensive damage.

“We are afraid. We can’t sleep,” the owner, who wasn’t identified, told CBS Los Angeles.

2 suspects killed in ‘gun battle’ with Oakland pawn shop owner after attempted robbery

OAKLAND, CA. — Two people were shot dead and four were injured during a robbery attempt at a pawn shop in East Oakland on Wednesday evening, according to police.

Just before 7:45 p.m., several people were shot in the 7100 block of International Boulevard at the Cash 4 Gold pawn shop, according to the police officers’ union.

According to the preliminary investigation, individuals armed with weapons entered the pawn shop and an exchange of gunfire took place between these individuals and the workers inside the establishment, the department said.

When officers arrived at the scene, they located multiple people who were struck by the gunfire. Medical personnel confirmed that one person was deceased. Five other people who were struck by gunfire, including the business owner, were taken to an area hospital, where a second person was confirmed dead, the Oakland Police Department said. The remaining three suspects were in stable condition as of 10:30 p.m., and the owner is expected to survive, according to Oakland Police Officers Association spokesperson Sam Singer. Singer said a robber allegedly pulled a gun on the store owner, who then pulled a gun on the robber and four accomplices. A “major gun battle” ensued, said Singer.

The store owner allegedly shot and killed the two people and wounded the other three. Detectives are conducting a follow-up investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, the department said. The Oakland Police Department will be holding a press conference on Thursday.

Anaheim, CA- Jewelry store owner scares off mob of thieves by firing warning shot.

Anaheim, CA- The attempted robbery happened at Al-Amira Jewelry on July 17. The owner told FOX 11 that it was close to closing time, when five cars pulled up to the front of the store.

Security camera footage showed about 20 people piling out of the cars and mobbing the store’s entrance. Some of them had sledgehammers and pickaxes and started smashing the door.

Seconds later, though, the group scattered, got back into their cars, and they all drove off.

Video from inside the store showed the other angle. When the people inside saw the thieves, they ran behind the counter. Several came back out to the front, armed. That’s when the owner fired one shot.

What they’re saying: The store’s owner said he thinks the group was watching the store. He said the group moved in just several minutes after one of the last customers left the store.

The owner said he heard a loud noise, and when he looked at the door, he saw “many people. I can’t count it.”

“Then I have to defend myself and my store and my employees. I take my gun, I shoot one bullet, I scare him (the person at the door), he moved and the problem is done,” the owner said.

The owner said that some of his family members were in the store when the group rushed the door.

“Every single one of them was covered in black, head to toe,” said Mohammad Abuershaid, an attorney for the jewelry store.

“Everybody should be vigilant and careful,” said Mohammed Kahn, a customer. “If they notice anything suspicious, they should speak up and report, so everyone is safe.”

For 30 years, Mahmud Salem has owned Sahara Falafel, a popular restaurant near Al-Amira Jewelry. He says he has never seen anything like this here before.

“It was like a movie,” said Salem. “It’s so sad. People are hungry and looking for bigger stuff [to steal].”

The owner’s lawyer told FOX 11 that the store has had one similar incident before, but the thieves couldn’t get into the store then either.About a month ago, another jewelry store across the street was also targeted by thieves. In that case, crooks drove a vehicle through the front of Besan Jewelry. The robbers then took jewelry estimated to be worth more than $3 million.

Jacksonville, FL- Pawn shop customer shoots at suspects during armed robbery.

JACKSONVILLE, Fl. — Action News Jax spoke with a man who said he witnessed a robbery at a local pawn shop and opened fire on the suspects. Police said three suspects, all dressed in black and wearing masks, entered the Cash America Pawn on Blanding Boulevard and stole $9,000 in jewelry.

Timothy Williams was inside the store on Saturday when it all happened. He said he watched those suspects break the glass on the jewelry counter, while another held the store door open.

“My buddy that was there was like ‘oh my God, I can’t believe this is happening,’” said Williams, referring to one of the employees. “And I was like, do you want me to put a stop to this, because they are coming closer to us and I don’t like this.”

Williams said he drew his concealed gun and shouted at the suspects to stop and get out. “The one guy with the hammer turned to me and raised the hammer and took a step toward me, and I pulled the trigger,” said Williams. “He kind of fell backward, stepped backward into his friend, and the friend dropped the bag that he had.”

Williams said he believed the bullet hit the suspect in the gut, but police did not confirm if anyone was hurt by gunfire. After that, Williams said the suspects ran out of the store and toward a restaurant next door.

“They dropped something in the doorway and another couple of pieces up between that store and the restaurant next door,” said Williams.

Police said another witness pulled his concealed carry firearm and fired one shot as one of the suspects ran in front of the store. Williams said he was glad he could put a stop to it.

“I hope they get caught,” said Williams. “If you are going to play stupid games, you are going to win stupid prizes, and somebody won a 22-magnum bullet.”

Action News Jax reached out to Cash America Pawn for a statement on this and any surveillance video they have. We have not heard back. Police are still looking for those suspects.
