DISTRACTION THEFT – LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ

On 11/20/21, at approximately 5:15 p.m., a sales associate was helping a male and female couple with two children. They were shopping for earrings for one of their daughters.  While this was occurring, the female customer asked to see men’s rings.  The sales associate showed her one ring and then the customer asked to see a second ring of a different size.  The associate placed one of the rings on a pad with the earrings that were selected and pulled out the second ring.

During the transaction, the sales associate took her eyes off the pad with the ring and when she went back to it, she discovered that one of the rings was missing. She stated she checked around the counter and on the floor but could not locate it.  The sales associate indicated that the female customer stated she thought she put it back in the case.  Eventually, she rang up the sale for the earrings and obtained the customer’s information for receipt purposes.  When the customers left she contacted mall security and asked to review the video of the mall CCTV.  A review revealed that the female customer had taken something from the counter and handed it to the male customer when the sales associate was distracted. The subjects were described as a Hispanic couple with two children. Their names were given to the police. If you have any information regarding these subjects, please contact the Jewelers’ Security Alliance at jsa2jewelerssecurity.org or 212-687-0328.
