PACKAGE RETRIEVAL SCAM

The Jewelers’ Security Alliance has recently been informed of a scam in which a female subject is calling jewelry stores claiming to be from FedEx or UPS. She states that the carrier shipped “the wrong cartons” and needed to send someone to “recall the package”. The suspect obtains the information on deliveries by surveillance of the store or by inquiry through social engineering, even obtaining tracking information. In one case the suspect had learned through surveillance that four packages had just been delivered to a jewelry store.

If the store allows for package to be retrieved, the subject will send a professional courier who will arrive and say he was there to recall the package. The subjects have successfully hit in San Francisco, but have also called stores in Boston, NY and FL. Do not give out a package.
