KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – A Joplin man will spend eight years in prison after using a handgun to rob a Helzberg Jewelers location in Kansas City.
Clay County Prosecutor Zachary Thompson announced on Thursday, June 18, that Antonio D. Alcorn, 32, of Joplin, was sentenced on a first-degree burglary conviction.
Investigators said the conviction stems from an incident on March 31, 2021, at the Helzberg Jewelers located on Barry Road in Kansas City.
According to prosecutors, Alcorn entered the store and asked to view several items – starting with lower-priced watches before moving to a high-end Movado Sapphire.
The Kansas City Police Department indicated that Alcorn then asked to see a 2-carat diamond ring and a pair of earrings.
When a store employee told Alcorn the ring needed to be secured before he could see the earrings, investigators said he pulled a handgun from his waistband.
Prosecutors noted that Alcorn then placed the firearm on the counter pointed at the employee, and demanded the earrings.
Alcorn then grabbed the gun, forced the employee to a watch case, and took the Movado watch, according to KCPD. The three stolen items totaled nearly $17,000.
“We hope justice being delivered brings closure to the victim for a terrifying experience and sends a strong message that dangerous criminal conduct will be punished,” Prosecutor Thompson said.
