Search warrant: 8 jewelry, fragrance cases smashed in jewelry heist

WAUWATOSA, Wis. — April 1, 2024 – A search warrant obtained by 12 News is shedding new light on a jewelry heist and high-speed chase Friday which ended with four people in custody.

Wauwatosa police were called to a department store’s entrance at Mayfair Mall after four that morning “for multiple burglar alarms including a glass break alarm,” according to the warrant.

They arrived to a 2018 Kia Sorento backed up to the entrance; the vehicle was reported stolen on March 22 by University Park police in Illinois. The Kia reportedly sped off as soon as police arrived, initiating a high-speed chase reaching approximately 115 mph. The chase was picked up by the Germantown Police Department when the Kia crossed the county line before the vehicle crashed off of I-41 near Slinger.

According to the court document, three individuals were taken into custody after the crash, with two of them running from police. A fourth individual was arrested at a BP Gas Station on County Line Road in Washington County.

Detectives at the scene discovered “Movado watches, earrings, a necklace and rings on the ground near the crash scene” that were believed to have been swiped from the department store. The search warrant also said that eight jewelry and fragrance cases were broken into at the store.

One of the people in custody told Wauwatosa police that “they brought bolt cutters and sledgehammer with them to commit the burglary. They also brought a garbage can and a plastic tote which was filled up with stolen property during the burglary.” As of Monday night, none of the four individuals named in the search warrant had been charged.
