On 7/22/22, at approximately 11:30 a.m., a suspect, later identified as 20-year-old Mark Lauteren, walked into a jewelry store and grabbed several rings. When Lauteren was confronted by employees, he stated that he would use a gun in his pocket. The suspect then left and drove off in a white Mustang with Washington license plates. After searching the area, officers from Prosser, WA identified the Mustang driving east on Interstate 82 and traveling towards Benton City and Tri-Cities, WA. Authorities from Prosser attempted to pull Lauteren over, with the help of Benton County Sheriff’s deputies who followed him to the Benton City area, which is about 20 miles away. The pursuit reached speeds of up to 100 mph. During the chase Lauteren rammed a Benton County Sheriff’s vehicle and was subsequently arrested.
