Singapore – 2 men arrested after allegedly stealing diamond worth $235K from jewelry store in Chinatown

Two men were arrested on Friday (19 June) after they allegedly stole a diamond worth more than S$235,000 from a jewellery store in Chinatown.

They allegedly did this by swapping the diamond with a fake one, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said in a news release sent to MS News.

Men allegedly swapped diamond while examining it at Chinatown shop

The two men visited the store along Kreta Ayer Road on Friday, SPF said.

They showed interest in purchasing the diamond and were allowed to examine it, according to preliminary investigations.

But while doing so, they replaced it with a fake one and left the shop without making any purchases.

Suspicions from shop assistant led to discovering fake diamond

Their behaviour raised suspicion among a shop assistant.

He then checked the diamond and discovered that it had been replaced with a fake.

The police were called at about 3.40pm.

Brookings, SD- Grand jury indicts Brookings man in $78,000 theft of diamond rings

BROOKINGS, SD — A grand jury in Brookings County has indicted a Brookings resident on multiple charges for his alleged role in a burglary involving the theft of diamond rings valued at more than $78,000.

Larry Black, 52, was indicted on April 22 in the March 3 incident at Riddle’s Jewelry, 950 22nd Ave., in Brookings, according to information from the Brookings Police Department and the Brookings County State’s Attorney’s Office. The charges are:

  • Third-degree burglary, which, under state law, is a Class 5 felony.
  • Grand theft, a Class 4 felony.
  • Intentional damage to property, a Class 4 felony.

If convicted on all counts, Black faces a maximum potential penalty of 25 years in prison and fines totaling $50,000. Those numbers derive from the potential for 10-year prison terms and $20,000 fines for each Class 4 violation, and the five-year prison term and $10,000 fine for the Class 5 violation.

The BPD said the rings have been recovered, and Black remained in the Brookings County Detention Center as of June 1, awaiting trial.

The incident unfolded on March 3 at 12:29 a.m., when the BPD responded to an alarm indicating a break-in at Riddle’s Jewelry. Officers arrived to find shattered glass, missing rings and a smear of blood, according to a probable cause statement.

Investigators determined the bicycle used in the burglary did not belong to Black. The owner was not involved in the crime, and Black allegedly took and returned the bike without permission, according to the statement.

The statement noted that, following April 14 results from state lab testing of the blood, a warrant was issued to obtain Black’s DNA and to search the residence he was living in at Normandy Village Mobile Home Park.

He was taken into custody on April 15.

Elkton, MD – Masked NJ suspect charged with using fuel, fireworks in Walmart kids section as cover for massive jewelry heist

Elkton, MD– A New Jersey man was arrested Thursday after allegedly sparking a massive fire with camping fuel and fireworks inside a Maryland Walmart, creating a terrifying diversion to pull off a $10,000 jewelry heist.

Anthony J. Rhodes, 36, of Berlin, New Jersey, was taken into custody without incident by local police and is currently sitting in a Camden County jail awaiting extradition to Maryland.

His charges include first-degree arson and manufacturing an explosive device.

The chaotic scene unfolded on the night of April 29 at a store in Elkton, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Security video showed a masked man entering the store with a backpack and loading a grocery cart with camping fuel and several boxes of fireworks, officials said.

The suspect then parked the shopping cart next to the children’s clothing section and set it ablaze.

As the fire grew and fireworks began exploding inside the store, customers and staff scrambled for the exits.

Authorities said the suspect then smashed into the store’s jewelry counter, stealing nearly $10,000 worth of merchandise before walking out and fleeing the scene on a motorcycle.

While firefighters from the Singerly Fire Company quickly extinguished the flames and contained direct fire damage to around $5,000, Walmart said the smoke, soot and subsequent cleanup resulted in $10 million in lost inventory.

Officials said Rhodes was wearing a Jefferson University Baseball T-shirt during the heist, which investigators used to track him down.

Rhodes did not have a connection to the university or its sports teams, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF); and Walmart Global Investigations assisted with the investigation.

“Working side-by-side with our ATF partners and Walmart Global Investigations, our team was able to identify a suspect quickly,” acting State Fire Marshal Jason Mowbray wrote in a statement after the arrest. “Investigations such as these require an all-hands approach, and I am proud of everyone who was able to bring this case to a close.”

A Walmart spokesperson told Fox News Digital the company “appreciate[s] the partnership with law enforcement and their swift action in this investigation.”

According to the criminal complaint, Rivera, who was the getaway driver, along with two individuals, entered Tio Jewelers while the store was closed and waited for the manager to arrive.
